Vitamin Water

Recipe for  Vitamin WaterThis drink is full of antioxidants. It’s hydrating and I think better than any of the vitamin waters you can buy.

Pour 6 cups good quality water into a pitcher and add:

  • 1 large lemon and/or lime, thinly sliced (good for stress & immune system) – you can also make a combo of lemons, lime and even oranges
  • 1 small cucumber, skin left on and sliced thinly (hydrating)
  • Palmful each: mint and basil, chopped (mint has potassium, calcium, magnesium & iron – good for bones & heart; basil has vit E, potassium and protein – great for skin)

Need to sweeten it? Try raw honey.

Take a spoon and smoosh everything gently. This releases the good oils of the fruit & herbs. Chill, strain and serve, garnished with a fresh herb, flower, or citrus slice.

Note the blue flower in the pitcher…it’s a Borage Flower which is actually an herb; easy growing annual plant with vivid blue flowers and leaves with the flavor of cucumbers. In this recipe, it can be used as a substitute for cucumber.

  1. More of a question. I planted stevia in my back yard. It has done wonderful. If I want to save it. Do I have to bring it in for the winter or will it survive outside?

    Here’s what Rita said…
    Stevia is a South American herb and is considered a tender perennial here in our climate. It can tolerate down to about 15 degrees. Cut it back by a third at least when bringing in the house and if you can, pull the plant out of the pot and check for “hitchhikers”, little pill bugs, etc. Stevia does well in a sunny location. Make stevia extract from the leaves: 1/2 cup packed leaves to 1 cup distilled water. Smoosh leaves with a spoon to release oils into water. Bring to a simmer, not a boil, cover. Leave cover on, remove from heat, let sit until room temperature then strain out. Refrigerate up to 2 weeks for freeze for several months.
