How often have we been lead to believe that being overweight is a “cause” of diabetes? But, maybe you’ve never heard this one. Weight gain may actually be an “early symptom” rather than a “primary cause” of Type 2 Diabetes?
Dr. Linda Bacon, a nutrition educator and author of Health at Every Size; The Surprising Truth About Your Weight, and psychotherapist Judith Matz, The Director of the Chicago Center for Overcoming Overeating, Inc., and co-author of The Diet Survivor’s Handbook: 60 Lessons in Eating, Acceptance and Self-Care (both authors are A Weigh Out Circle Contributors), have just written an empowering article that busts many of the myths about diabetes. For example, they write,
“In the care and treatment of Type 2 Diabetes, the value of achieving and maintaining weight loss has long been an unchallenged tenet. So you maybe surprised to learn that there is limited evidence to support this emphasis. In fact, evidence suggests that the pursuit of weight loss–which more often results in fluctuating weight than in permanent weight loss–can actually be harmful, physically and emotionally. It also tends to distract a person from the behaviors and attitudes that really can improves one’s health, such as eating well, being physically active, and cultivating a positive sense of self.”
